September 23, 2013: EASD BARCELONA SPAIN
An original research on preserving the beta cell function in type 2 diabetes was presented from Jothydev’s Diabetes & Research Centre, Trivandrum at the 49th European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting at Barcelona, Spain. The original research looked into the significance of intensive blood glucose lowering with the help of Diabetes Tele Management System – a tele monitoring system supported by a network of computers and a multidisciplinary professional team aggressively controlling diabetes through periodic education and advices. It was found that the C-peptide level which indirectly indicates the available insulin from the pancreas is retained within acceptable levels in patients followed up via the telemedicine based education system compared to those on usual follow up system.

Retaining acceptable levels of C-peptide even after 10 or 15 years of onset of diabetes not only helps in the prevention of long term complications but will also reduce the escalating cost of treating complications of diabetes. Dr. Jothydev Kesavadev, Dr. Arun Shankar, Gopika Krishnan, Jayasree Lally, Geethu Sanal, Sunitha Jothydev etc. participated in the original study. EASD is one of the largest international conferences attended upon by around 20,000 diabetologists and researchers from all over the world.
