It’s 100 years since the discovery of insulin, the discovery that changed the life of
millions thereafter. On behalf of Kesavadev Trust, JPEF and IMA Nemom, JPEF Mini CME
'100 Years to Insulin, Series 4' was hosted virtually on 11 March 2021, from
07:30 pm to 10:00 pm. The scientific symposium comprised quiz, live educational
sessions and panel discussions with the experts.
The program was set off by Ms.Gopika Krishnan, Head, Academics and Research,
Jothydev's Diabetes Research Centre (JDC) with a brief welcome. This was followed
by a much appreciated quiz session, hosted by Dr.Arun Shankar, Senior consultant
Diabetologist and Medical Director, JDC and Dr.Nijisha N, Regional Medical Advisor,
Clinical Medical Regulatory Quality (CMRQ).
The scientific sessions began with the lecture on 'The Miracle of Insulins through the
Century: Before and Beyond’ by Dr.Jothydev Kesavadev, Chairman and Managing Director,
JDC. Dr.Asha Ashik, Clinical Head and Chief diabetologist, JDC, Kochi subsequently spoke
on ‘From 1940s to 2021: Stability through the Decades- from Longer to Flatter to more
Predictable Insulins’. Dr.Arun Shankar, Senior consultant Diabetologist and Medical
Director, JDC was the chairperson of the two sessions.
Later Dr.Jayaprakash P, Consultant Endocrinologist, Medical Trust Office,
and Dr.Prasanth Sankar, Consultant in Internal Medicine & Diabetes, MGM Muthoot Hospital,
Pathanamthitta, gave insights on ‘At the Heart of Successful Insulinization: A Spotlight on
Indian Realities’ and ‘Shift to Swift- Faster Acting Insulins Revolutionizing Diabetes Care’
respectively, under the chair of Dr.Ashwin David Ashok, Clinical Head and Chief diabetologist,
JDC, Attingal. Dr.Sunil Prasobh P, Physician and diabetologist, Additional Prof. of Internal
Medicine, Govt. Medical College Kollam, provided a talk on, ‘Covid and Diabetes - The Direction Forward’.
The talk was chaired by Dr.Mohanan Nair, Chairman, IMA AMS, Nemom Chapter.
The final session was an all-inclusive discussion by all the faculty on ‘Insulins Today
and Beyond’ . Dr.Sumesh Raj, Prof. of Internal Medicine & Diabetology,
Sree Gokulam Medical College, Trivandrum moderated the panel discussion. The
event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Arun Shankar. Hundreds of doctors and
allied health workers from around Kerala participated in this virtual educational event.
